The
Surgical Residency Program at SFMC has been in existence since 1947
as a freestanding training program. In 1999, the program became a
university affiliate with the
prestigious Seton Hall University, in South Orange, New
Jersey. There are 15 positions available to the Department of Surgery,
which graduate 2 fully trained general surgeons each year. There
are 9 faculty members at SFMC; several of these members are full
time, with a full time program director, all of which are dedicated
to the training of these residents. In addition, the SFMC surgical
residents rotate to St. Joseph’s Regional
Medical Center
in Patterson, NJ, where they receive
training in Trauma and Pediatric
Surgery. Overall, the surgical residents are trained in general
surgery, including thoracic, bariatric, minimally invasive, vascular,
surgical intensive care, colorectal, breast, trauma, pediatric,
and complicated oncologic surgery.
The surgical residents at SFMC are in the
best-developed and highly qualified surgical departments in
Mercer County. It is truly the only academic program in central New
Jersey.
There are a total of 23 residents in the Internal Medicine
Program. We also
rank through the NRMP each year with 8 categorical slots and 2 designated
preliminary residents. Designated means that they must have matched
in a
program that begins in the second year and will need to complete
their first
year in Medicine. They must have a commitment letter from a program
before we can even consider them for one of two slots. There are
13
rotations per year including Emergency Medicine, Orthopedics, Ophthalmology,
Psychiatry, Ambulatory (private office), Dermatology, Office Gynecology,
ENT. The residents are offered
an opportunity in their
second year for an outside subspecialty elective. This is a very
important
step for selection/entry into a Fellowship after completing training.
Each resident gets 21 days vacation with 7 time off days. Every residents
has
one in seven days off and will not be on call more than every fourth
night.
Internal Medicine is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Graduate
Medical Education (ACGME) and is currently accredited for three years.
The next visit will be in 2010.
