ChapelAs a member of Catholic Health East (CHE), under the Sponsorship of Hope Ministries, and in accordance with the philosophy and tradition of its founders, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia, St. Francis Medical Center is a community of persons committed to being a transforming, healing presence within the communities we serve.

Based on Gospel values, we provide quality health care in an environment that fosters the values of  reverence for each person, community, justice, stewardship, courage, integrity, health care education, and a commitment to those who are poor.

To live out this mission we:

  • Treat all persons with respect and compassion.
  • Create an environment that recognizes the dignity of all those with whom we work, calling forth their fullest human potential.
  • Provide a range of services that support healthy communities, including quality medical care and holistic approaches to healing the mind, body, and spirit.
  • Collaborate with others who share a common mission and vision.
  • Continually seek innovative ways to assure access to services for persons most in need.
  • Advocate for the principles of social justice that affect public policies and initiatives, particularly those in the area of health care that ensure quality of life for all.

 Mission And Ministry

For over 131 years, the mission of the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia has remained constant; to serve and be responsive to the needs of others, especially the sick, the poor, and the dying. To help assure that this mission at St. Francis Medical Center would continue to be a motivational force in day-to-day activities of the institution, the Division of Mission and Ministry was established in 1987. Under the leadership of the Vice President, Carol Jaworski the division concentrates its efforts on building a corporate culture that reflects a Judaic-Christian philosophy and follows The Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Organizations.

Mission Effectiveness connects the Franciscan Philosophy with our CHE Mission and Values. This is accomplished by means of services that identify and strengthen the values that are fundamental to the operations of the hospital. The values process is designed to help each person appreciate his or her unique giftedness and the value of what each one brings to the mission and life of the Medical Center. Mission Effectiveness services include Social Accountability, Mission and Ministry Committee, and Institutional Ethics.

Spiritual Care, under the direction of Sister Maureen Maguire, OSF, concretely expresses the Medical Center's holistic approach to patient care where the patient is recognized as a spiritual being, as well as a physical being. It recognizes the person in terms of relationships to self, others, and to God. Services focus on the spiritual, emotional, and social needs of patients and their families from a theological perspective, offering counseling in situations of crisis, ethical dilemmas, and grief. The Spiritual Care professional helps the sick and those who care for them discover a new sense of meaning in the midst of pain and suffering. Chaplain Sister Maureen Maguire, OSF, is available to address the spiritual needs of patients, families and employees. All patients are visited by a chaplain or Pastoral Care volunteer. If at any time you wish to speak with a chaplain, call extension 5090 weekdays, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. At other times, a chaplain is available upon request; contact the operator by dialing 0, or make your request known to the nursing staff.

For Catholic patients, the anointing of the sick with oil is called the Sacrament of the Sick. In this sacred anointing, the priest will pray for you and will ask the Lord Jesus to heal you. You may want to receive this anointing as a means of strengthening you in your illness and as an aid in your recovery.

A priest is available for patients who wish to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). Please contact your floor chaplain by dialing the Pastoral Care Office at extension 5090 or contact the operator to request the service of the priest on call.

 Holy Communion

Holy Communion is administered daily by our chaplains and Eucharist ministers.

 Chapel

We welcome all patients and visitors to the chapel either for services or for quiet reflection. Patients going to the chapel must have permission from their physician and nurse. You may feel free to come in your robe and slippers. The Chapel is located on the ground floor near the back entrance to the Medical Center. Masses and other services from the Chapel are televised on channel 39 along with inspirational and relaxation music.
