Since the early formation of Catholic Health East, the CHE Sponsors Council has discussed the need for an alternative method of sponsorship that would ensure the future of the ministries of Catholic Health East. For three years, they studied, consulted and eventually designed a model that became Hope Ministries. The Sponsors Council then petitioned the congregation for Institutes of Consecrated Life and Societies of Apostolic Life for the establishment of Hope Ministries as a public juridic person of Pontifical right. On July 7, 2000, Hope Ministries was established by the Congregation.

Hope Ministries is designed to serve as a sponsoring body for new organizations that join CHE and for those organizations whose sponsors may eventually need to transfer sponsorship to another public juridic person. It will serve as a vehicle to strengthen the ministry for the future. It is an organization that will enable ministries to continue their service as Catholic healthcare organizations and allow other-than-Catholic organizations to join Catholic Health East and develop an identity as Catholic.
